THE GLOBAL FUND PARAGUAY AND SIGN NEW AGREEMENT

€ 3.5 million for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of HIV and AIDS

Assumption - The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the Center for Information and Resources for Development today signed an agreement for € 3.5 million for two years to support HIV programs AIDS. This grant will allow Paraguay to increase their treatment interventions and care of people living with HIV, six of their health regions.

"I am delighted to join Dr. Agustín Carrizosa, ICDR Executive Director to sign the agreement with Paraguay round 8 of the Global Fund," said Professor Michel Kazatchkine, Global Fund Executive Director, who traveled to Asuncion to attend the regional meeting of the Global Fund and to sign the agreement with Paraguay. "This agreement reflects the efforts of Paraguay to expand access to prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS, continuing the fight against this epidemic," he said.

Paraguay is a country of 6 million inhabitants, of which 21.000 live with HIV / AIDS. Its HIV prevalence rate is 0.6 percent. Paraguay has another grant from the Global Fund started in 2007 and has managed to provide ARV treatment to 1.857 people.

The grant was signed today is for a total of € 12 million for five years and be implemented by the Foundation DNIC. Programs supported by the Global Fund and covered by this grant include treatment services HIV and AIDS, treatment for Sexually Transmitted Infections, Behavior Change Communications, an increase in grassroots participation in the national response, among others.

To date, the Global Fund has approved grants worldwide for U.S. $ 16,100 million in 140 countries since its creation in 2002. The Global Fund currently provides a quarter of all international funding for AIDS, as well as two-thirds for tuberculosis and malaria.

The Global Fund supports programs that provide services to hundreds of millions of people. As a result, more than 4 million lives have been saved to date worldwide. 3,000 deaths are prevented each day. The overall results of programs supported by the Global Fund throughout the world include:

  • 2.3 million people currently on antiretroviral treatment ( ARV).
  • 5.4 million people in effective treatment against tuberculosis.
  • 88 million insecticide-treated nets distributed to protect families against malaria.
  • 79 million people who have been provided with HIV counseling and which have been tested for HIV.
  • 537.000 seropositive pregnant women which have been provided with prophylaxis to prevent transmission of HIV from mother to child.
  • 110 million people to whom they have provided communications services community.
  • 3.7 million orphans who have received basic support.
